Minneapolis is one of the nation's biggest little cities, brimming with activity and charm. The city's 24 lakes provide the perfect backdrop for picnicking in the summertime and ice-skating figure-eights in the winter. Whether citizens are relaxing down at the sidewalk cafes, taking advantage of its copious, diverse shops, or simply taking in an evening at the theater, it's no wonder that this bustling half of the famed Twin Cities draws visitors from across the nation each year.

Downtown Minneapolis has plenty of three- and four-star hotels for comfortable lodging. The most popular lodging options are centered around the city's convention center and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Interspersed with the towering hotels of downtown, several charming and cozy bed and breakfasts are tucked away. At the edges of town, however, lodging consists mainly of affordable but basic motels.

Minneapolis Restaurants

Historically, Minneapolis dining has been tied to its hardy Scandinavian and German roots. However, as immigrants from around the country and world have moved here, they have brought their own ethnic food traditions. In fact, the 12 blocks of Nicollet Avenue between Grant and 29th streets house so many ethnic restaurants and grocery stores that the area has earned the nickname "Eat Street."

The Warehouse district to the northwest of downtown bursts at the seams with nighttime activity, sporting more than 40 bars and several nightclubs. People come here for dancing, barhopping and some late-night dining, all started with a round or two at happy hour. The Riverfront district, on both sides of the river, provides late-night fare and several wine bars cater to a hipster crowd. The Hennepin Theatre district in Uptown Minneapolis is the perfect place for a relaxing night out with its three historic theaters and many restaurants.

Downtown Minneapolis underwent a building boom in recent years, with many condominiums and lofts coming onto the market. While the converted warehouse lofts in downtown sell for more than a quarter million dollars each, new condos in the area tend to be more affordable. Northeast Minneapolis was traditionally filled with a large Eastern European population, but today this neighborhood is called home by the artistic crowd and influential Asian and Latin American populations. South of downtown, the diverse Central neighborhood is rich in history, having been originally developed between 1900 and 1930. Affordable housing can be found to the south of downtown in Whittier, which houses the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Nicollet Avenue.

For those who consider shopping a sport, exercise can be had at the Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the United States with 520 shops, located just outside Minneapolis near the airport in the suburb of Bloomington.

The internationally renowned Walker Art Center has garnered a reputation as the best multidisciplinary museum in the world. It presents diverse programs in the performing and visual arts and stunning exhibits in the mediums of film and video. Furthermore, Minneapolis has the second-highest number of theaters per capita, second only to New York City. Notable theaters include the Orpheum Theater, the State Theater, Hey City Theater, Pantages Theater and the Guthrie Theater.
